Sophia Karakouta

Vocal Instructor | Classical Singer | Ancient Greek Music Specialist

Sophia Karakouta, singer and music educator, is widely recognized for her contributions to contemporary Greek music. Her versatile vocal style enables her to interpret a broad range of genres, spanning from ancient Greek music to art song (entechno), musical theatre, and the classical repertoire.

She has studied piano, classical voice, harmony, counterpoint, and choral conducting. At the age of 20, she was awarded a scholarship to pursue her studies in the United States at the New England Conservatory in Boston, from which she graduated with distinction in 2003. She later earned her Master’s degree with honors from the University of Macedonia, specializing in Music Science and Art.

Since 2010, Sophia has been devoted to the revival and interpretation of ancient Greek repertoire. She is a member of the ensemble Orpheia Harmonia, where she performs on the epigonion (an ancient harp) and sings adaptations of ancient and ancient-inspired compositions. She has collaborated with composer Dr. Nikos Xanthoulis on projects such as the album Sappho and Her Lyre, which features musical settings of Sapphic poetry, with the composer himself accompanying her on the lyre. Additionally, she is a member of the music ensemble “Les Λyristes”, whose mission is the revival of the ancient Greek lyre.

She has taught classical voice at conservatories both in the state of Washington and in Thessaloniki, and has delivered masterclasses at the University of Tampa in Florida and the International Festival of Porto Heli. She currently teaches at the Lifelong Learning Center of Democritus University of Thrace, and conducts the choir within the Cultural Prescriptions Program of the Thessaloniki Concert Hall.

Sophia Karakouta has appeared as a soloist in major concerts and international festivals in the United States, France, Italy, Albania, North Macedonia, and Greece. Her performances have received high praise for both their emotional depth and technical excellence. Her career continues to evolve as she explores new musical directions and projects.
