Musicologist | Educator | Ancient Greek Lyre Specialist
Dr. Evangelia Kopsalidou is an esteemed music educator, researcher, and performer specializing in the revival and pedagogy of the ancient Greek seven-stringed lyre. She currently serves as Specialized Teaching Staff in Music Education at the School of Education Sciences, Democritus University of Thrace, a position she has held since 2003.
She holds a degree in Music from the Ionian University, and a D.E.A. (Diplôme d’Études Approfondies) in Musicology from the Sorbonne – Paris IV University. She also earned her PhD in Music and Musicology from the prestigious Lettres Sorbonne Université, with a research focus bridging theory and musical practice.
Dr. Kopsalidou was awarded the Second Diploma in Ancient Greek Lyre Performance (with distinction and first prize) from the Municipal Conservatory of Nikaia – Agios Ioannis Rendis in Athens, under the mentorship of Dr. Nikolaos Xanthoulis.
She is the founder and academic director of the first official university-level program dedicated to the ancient Greek lyre, titled “The Ancient Greek Lyre in Education”, offered through the Democritus University of Thrace’s Lifelong Learning Center.
As a performing musician, she is active in both Greek and international scenes, offering concerts that span from early music to contemporary adaptations of ancient repertoire. In addition to the lyre, she performs on piano, viola da gamba, and recorder.
Dr. Kopsalidou has authored numerous publications, including academic articles, educational material, and conference papers. Her work uniquely combines musicological research with practical performance, contributing to the global effort of reviving ancient Greek musical traditions.
She offers private lyre lessons online through the International Lyre Society, guiding students of all levels through structured, research-based teaching.
