This course is designed for beginners who want to explore the art of playing the Ancient Greek seven-stringed Lyre. Based on the method developed by Dr. Nikos Xanthoulis, it offers a structured and practical path into the world of this historic instrument.

Through a series of progressive exercises, the course introduces the player to basic harmonies, chords, and elementary melodic patterns. By the end of this level, students will be able to perform short pieces that combine musical expression with historical awareness, forming a solid base for further advancement.

What you will learn:

Holding the Lyre & Basic Posture
You will begin by learning how to hold the lyre properly, establishing correct posture and hand coordination. This foundation ensures comfort and accuracy while playing.

Open String Exercises
The first module introduces playing with the open strings, focusing on tone clarity, finger movement, and rhythm. You will practice using both fingers and the plectrum, building fundamental skills through guided exercises.

Working with Chords
This section teaches how to form basic chords by muting specific strings and playing the desired notes. You will explore common examples like Am and Gm chords to strengthen your technique and musical awareness.

Ties and Rhythmic Patterns
In this section, you explore ties and more complex rhythms that strengthen your timing, control, and performance readiness.

Lyrodies: Voice and Lyre Together
In this unique module, you will begin to combine voice with lyre playing. These preliminary vocal exercises, known as Lyrodies, draw from ancient practices and bring melodic storytelling to life.

Songs and Repertoire
The final section offers a small set of beginner-friendly songs that apply everything learned in the course.

All exercises are based on the standard tuning of the lyre: A-Bb-C-D-E-F-G.
Each chapter includes videos, the first part of Xanthoulis’ Method, and guided instructions.

This section is designed to help you develop essential performance skills on the ancient Greek seven-stringed lyre through a series of structured exercises focusing on open strings and various tonic notes. You will gain practical experience in tone production, hand coordination, and spatial awareness across the instrument’s natural tuning while using both your fingers and the plectrum. Emphasis is placed on precision, rhythmic discipline, and posture, establishing the technical groundwork necessary for more advanced repertoire. This section introduces the foundational principles of chordal playing on the ancient Greek seven-stringed lyre. Basic Exercises with Ties and Rhythms
In this section, we combine two essential elements of lyre performance: the expressive connection of ties and the vital pulse of rhythm. Through a series of progressive exercises, you will learn how to create a sense of continuity between notes while maintaining the clear articulation that defines ancient Greek lyre playing. We will explore traditional Greek rhythmic patterns such as 5/8, 7/8, and 8/8, developing precision, flow, and musical awareness. Preliminary Exercises for Voice and Lyre
In this section, we begin our journey into Lyrody – the union of voice and lyre, the quintessential expression of ancient Greek music and, perhaps, of all music.
