ILS Academy Courses – A Structured Path to Mastering the Ancient Greek Lyre
The International Lyre Society (ILS) offers a structured and historically grounded educational program dedicated to reviving and studying the ancient Greek seven-stringed lyre. Our academy guides students through every stage of learning – from first contact with the instrument to advanced artistic development.
The Free Introductory Level is now fully available to all registered members. Students learn the essential foundations of lyre playing, including correct posture, hand positioning, rhythmic awareness, and sound production on open strings. The course includes selected teaching material from Dr. Nikolaos Xanthoulis’ Complete Method, along with instructional videos demonstrating introductory exercises, simple chords, and melodic fragments. These lessons help learners build confidence and musical understanding while experiencing the unique sound of the ancient Greek lyre.
Enrollment is also open for the Basic Level, where students expand their technical skills and deepen their musical expression. Accepted applicants receive a confirmation email with detailed information about the course structure, study material, and tuition fees.
The Intermediate and Advanced Levels are currently in development and will soon provide comprehensive instruction for experienced players, focusing on repertoire expansion, interpretation, and advanced performance techniques.
Each level of the ILS Academy balances historical authenticity with living performance practice. Through our structured program, students not only study an ancient instrument but also become part of its modern revival.
